One Room Challenge: Week 1

Here we go again!

I am so happy to be back for the Spring 2021 One Room Challenge as a Featured Designer, along with 20 other design creatives.

WHAT IS THE ORC?

If you missed my announcement blog post, or you are new to the ORC world, here’s a refresher straight from the source!

The One Room Challenge™, currently in its nineteenth season, is a widely anticipated biannual event every April and October. Each round, twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge, as Featured Designers, and transform a space. Every Wednesday, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over six weekly posts. It will provide participants with a supportive, enthusiastic forum to share the process of transforming a room. The ORC is not a competition, but rather a celebration of creativity, inspiration, and original ideas.

Follow along as these twenty Featured Designers take you through the entire process of designing a space over six weeks. They’ll share professional tips and tricks for planning, researching, and selecting elements to help you create a unique, custom room design.

The Room

For this challenge, I am designing my bedroom. A place where I can go to relax; turn the music up, and turn the world off. The focus of this room will be on rest and rejuvenation aka self-care. It will be the space to do all the things I should, but don’t do for myself. It will be the place where I am always first on the list.

Up until now, this space has been pretty neglected, as you can see from the photos below. I’ll admit, these photos are what the room looked like when the previous owner lived here, but nothing much about it has changed, other than the fact that there is much less furniture and it is in need of a lot more TLC.

The challenge? This is reality and not a virtual situation like my last rendezvous with the ORC. And the reality is, transforming anything in a short period of time could be a recipe for disaster. Especially with me being the client, because, as we all know; I like everything! It's hard for me to reign myself in when it comes to design styles because there is something across all of them that I can appreciate. However, from a functional standpoint, my list of needs in the space is pretty simple as the room dictates the direction I’ll move in. Below are the deets of my space:

  • Room: Bedroom

  • Size: 800 Square Feet

  • Spaces: Sleeping, Sitting, Closet, & Juice/Coffee Bar

  • Goal: To Finish

THE PLAN:

Here’s what I am thinking space plan-wise, for my not-so-sweet suite.

The million-dollar question:

Will this DIY project and time constraint be the death of me? Or will I persevere and overcome a lack of sleep, product, contractors, time, and patience, in order to transform my space into something special? Only time will tell.

So stay with me on this beautiful journey, and follow along as these twenty Featured Designers take you through the entire process of designing a space over six weeks. They’ll share professional tips and tricks for planning, researching, and selecting elements to help you create a unique, custom room design.
