One Room Challenge: Week 2

Here we are in week two of the One Room Challenge

If you are just joining me on this journey, let me catch you up. Last week I introduced the space (a one-room cottage retreat), assessed the client's needs, surveyed the room, and began our space planning efforts.

This week

is all about the design concept. This is where we (the designer) inspire you (the client) with our preliminary design concept for your space by using necessary drawings, color schemes, key fabrics, finishes, and mood boards.

The Concept

Inspiration for a project can come from anywhere. Be it fashion, music, a destination or travel find, a fond memory, or even a bucket list item, sourcing inspiration for an interior helps lay the design concept's groundwork. My Inspiration for this space is endless, and with it being virtually designed, the sky is the limit. Pulling some of those concepts out of my head and onto paper will help me flush out a tighter design.

The Plan

I am still refining the space plan (struggling with it a bit, if I am honest). If you don’t remember my list of must haves from last week, here it is again.

  1. Bedroom Area with a king-sized bed and bedside storage

  2. Must be able to view the TV from the bed (yup, I'm a tv watcher in bed kind of guy)

  3. Defined sitting/living area with a sofa and chairs. (seating for 5, minimum)

  4. Kitchenette with full-sized appliances. A smaller range top is ok.

  5. Dining area with seating for 4.

  6. Small office/studio area (desk/table) near the natural light. This area should have the ability to be hidden from the rest space when it is not in use.

  7. All the comforts of a 5-star hotel suite

Working all the things on my list into this space is proving to be quite a task. I knew that my approach for this design project would be the same as it is with others, however I am learning that I also have to treat myself like a client (who knew?!), and that means looking at the project from all angles, while evaluating and prioritizing my list of needs.

This week, I’ll continue honing the concept, and coming up with the floor plan I can live with (literally). The focus next week will be one of my favorites; furniture selections! Stay tuned!!!

In the meantime if your space is giving you a challenge, get in touch, and let’s tackle it together!
